NOTICE: Sewer Smoke Testing in King Salmon - Wednesday, September 30, 2026
September 25, 2026
Humboldt Community Services District (HCSD) will be conducting sewer smoke testing in the King Salmon area on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
Smoke testing is a routine method used to identify potential sources of stormwater and groundwater entering the District’s sanitary sewer system. During the testing, a non-toxic smoke will be introduced into portions of the sewer system. The smoke may be visible coming from sewer cleanouts, roof vents, or other locations connected to the sewer system.
Residents may notice smoke in or around their property during the testing. The smoke used for this process is non-toxic and is not harmful to people, pets, or plants. The presence of smoke does not necessarily indicate a problem with the property; it may simply indicate a connection to the sewer system.
Residents do not need to be home for the testing. District personnel will be working in the streets and around sewer facilities throughout the King Salmon area during testing.
If smoke enters your home or building, it may indicate that a plumbing trap is dry or that there is another plumbing connection that requires attention. If you observe smoke inside your home, please contact HCSD at (707) 443-4558 so District staff can assist in determining the source.
The District appreciates residents' cooperation while this work is being conducted. The testing will help HCSD identify potential sources of unwanted water entering the sanitary sewer system and support the continued maintenance and reliability of the District's wastewater collection system.
